I have used this activity several times and my students not only enjoy it, but they retain a lot of knowledge when they do.
They are told they will be making foldables and then shown how to do it. They are then shown what goes on each flap of the foldable and that the last one if left blank to do another assignment on.
We then go over it as a whole group. I solicit answer and then use my answers to the foldable in the end so that they have everything that I know will be on their summative assessment and there are no holes.
This is the powerpoint I use for that. I then move on to heat transfer as part of the test but in a different powerpoint.
These serve as notes for my students before they do the layers of the atmosphere drawing activity.
I have included the checklist they use to self assess and I do collect and use as a classwork/minor grade at the end of the unit before the summative assessment. Walking around the room and going over the answers they got, I use this as a formative assessment.
I use this on lower level high school students, but just a little tweaking can allow you to differentiate it for any student at just about any level. All of my files can be edited.
