Rubrics are exceptional tools for laying the foundation for cooperative learning/group work, that is why I use this lesson at the beginning of the year - to lay down the foundation for group work and personal reflection.
In this lesson, students learn cooperative learning/group work expectations prior to working in groups. The lesson teaches the academic vocabulary of group work and personal reflection, expectations (rubric), and has a personal reflective component. Each rubric (two included – one for group work, the other personal reflection) incorporates critical thinking skills and requires that students provide evidence for their assertions/scores.
The lesson is flexible as it allows for incorporation of technology (digital forms, polling, and discussion board posting) as well as provides vocabulary graphic organizers for deeper word knowledge/investigation.
