I love these Accountable Talk sentence starters! In fact, I have them in my classroom and they work really well. I use them to promote respectful discussions among my students and to practice their higher-order thinking/critical thinking skills.
I have coded the sentence starters according to shapes. The yellow stars are sentence starters that students can use to give their opinion about something. The pink hearts are sentence starters that they can use to express a like/dislike. The green speech blurbs can be used to build on the opinion of others, and the blue clouds can be used as sentence starters to ask for clarification/help.
These can be posted around the classroom all at once, they can be posted a few at a time- depending on what you would like to work on, or they can be laminated and given to students when they are working together in groups and having a focused discussion.
I have used these in both my Core and Immersion classrooms. I have also used Accountable talk in my report card comments when evaluating oral communication.
