The 'Number of the Day'--or 'Le nombre du jour'--daily ritual is a great way to get students' mathematical minds going in the morning or at the beginning of a math period.
The teacher prints one of the versions of this document on card stock and gets it laminated. The laminated poster can be pinned on the wall and, using a dry erase marker, a new number can be written on the thought bubble section every day. The students would then have 5 minutes or so, on a lined sheet of paper, to copy down the letters 'a' through 'm' and complete each task for this 'number of the day'.
The teacher can then go through the correct answers and strategies on the board as the class corrects their own work.
