This four page document includes two handouts on leads (beginnings) in fiction. The first handout provides students with 15 different beginnings to novels and short stories - all powerful and enticing in their own way. Students read through the beginnings and explain what makes them want to continue reading. The next handout provides students with explanations of five different types of leads (examples included): 1. Starting in the Middle of a Scene, 2. Leisurely Lead 3. Beginning at the Ending, 4. Introducing the Narrator, and 5. The Misleading Lead. These lessons work well at the beginning of a writing fiction unit.
