This is a 250 slide PowerPoint presentation about leaf identification (Some Northeast United States but will have value if you live in another area). Student's will be able to identify features of most any broadleaf tree. Student's create a rubbing of leaf shapes using crayons and then some basics about leaf identification are provided for students to add details to their rubbing (any forest will work). The rest of the lesson includes a learn and then challenge approach to the PowerPoint medium. A neat section about Poison Ivy is also provided from my poisonous plants lesson that I offer on TpT. Also included is a two page homework / classwork sheet that chronologically follows the PowerPoint slideshow.

Also included is a small segment from my ecology interactions unit about relative abundance and population sampling. I like to fill a tray with leaves and have students identify the leaves and then determine the relative abundance of each species in the tray. Directions are included.
The PowerPoint begins with a picture of a White Oak leaf and students need to describe the leaf. They generally use words like green and large, the next slide reveals some terminology associated with leaf structure. I describe in the PowerPoint how there are thousands of different plant species and a lot criteria is used to identify leaves. Student are then asked make a rubbing of a few leaves using crayons and paper (notebook will work). A series of slides dives deep into features of leaf identification. Common leaves are then describe with little hints to help students remember. Many of these leaves are leaves common to the Northeast United States (Pictures can easily be swapped to trees of your area). Conifer trees are also discussed before the students take a built in PowerPoint quiz that has many of the leaves we have learned. Answers are provided after the quiz. The question is previewed before the answer is revealed so the teacher can call upon students. This is a highly visual PowerPoint that makes identifying leaves easy and fun. I usually go for a walk with the students before the quiz and have students try and identify some leaves / trees around the playground. Also included is a small segment from Ecology Interactions unit that examines relative abundance. A neat extension project would be to have the students learn about relative abundance from the PowerPoint and then fill a tray with local leaves. Students identify the leaves and then determine their relative abundance.
This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more.
