Fluency
• CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.

 
Level 1. “Leap Year” is an emergent reader, simple sight words and words with picture clues.
Sight Words: a, has, this, is, the, for, on, and, all, have, every, rest, which, but, by, except
Words With Picture Clues: leap, year, day, February, frog, symbol, Leapling, birthday, September, April, June, November, date
 
Level 2. “Leap Year” is a harder version, more sight words and longer sentences.
Sight Words: there, are, in, comes, during, on, to, can, so, it, with, called
Words With Picture Clues: calendar, need, extra, one, add, people

Level 3. “Leap Year” is a version with more vocabulary and more details about the day.
Additional Vocabulary: we, say, only, they, if, take, how, long, earth, orbit, sun, really, make, up, century, not, unless, divisible

Level 4. “Leap Year” is the hardest version with words such as: from, was, so, that, could, would, be, of, solar, Roman, learn, Egyptian, however, actually, Gregorian, St. Bridget, St. Patrick, decide, woman, man, propose, marriage, leap frog, good, game, chance, born

Use for guided reading, and send home for extra practice.
 
Version 1 of each level: High frequency words and full color illustrations help younger
learners to use their reading strategies: pictures, phonics and context.
 
Version 2 of each level: Same text, but black and white illustrations for students to
read and color.
 
Version 3 of each level: Same text but without illustrations. Students show their
comprehension skills by creating their own illustrations.
