PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Spotlight on Fireworks is an informational text that teaches students some interesting facts and history about fireworks. On the level of language, it is equivalent to texts on Common Core’s Grades 4-6 complexity band. But because of its subject matter, this text can also be enjoyed by students in grades as low as 2nd or as high as 7th.

This lesson is an excellent one to offer to substitute teachers for several reasons:

• It’s a standalone lesson. There’s no need for the substitute to know where the students are up to in any given discipline and no need for her or him to do extracurricular reading as preparation.
• The lesson packs a punch! It teaches a lot and encompasses many skills, but without seeming to. The informational reading is light, conversational in tone. And the worksheets are fun.
• The packet includes a substitute form, in which the teacher can inform the substitute of rules, routines, drills, locations, etc.

But this lesson can just as easily be used by a teacher. Some days we ourselves want to do something extracurricular and fun, and yet we don’t want to waste precious teaching time. This lesson is ideal!

The packet includes the following:
a. Enjoyable, easy-to-read informational text about fireworks
b. WIK coupon sheet (What I know, what I want to know…)
c. “Imagine This”: Creative Writing worksheet
d. “Sketch It!”: Creative Art worksheet
e. Text-to-Self Connection - Writing: Writing worksheet
f. Text-to-Self Connection - Illustration: Art worksheet
g. Word Play: fun with words worksheet
h. Meaning through Context: Review sheet that focuses on students learning the meaning of words through context
i. Exit Tickets: quick review
j. Teacher’s Note and Answer Key
k. Substitute Form

Depending on the time you wish to allot to this lesson, you may decide to use all or some of these worksheets. (The alloted time I included -- 2 hours -- is approximate. If you decide to use all the worksheets, you'll definitely need way more time than that. The lesson can be broken up, with different worksheets used on different days.)They can also be assigned as homework for further reinforcement of word/writing skills.

We hope you’ll find this lesson a wonderful addition to your curriculum. Please do leave feedback, if possible. We're newbies on TPT and appreciate hearing from you all. Thank you!
