JAPAN! The Samurai (49 pages total) is a comprehensive lesson on the samurai warrior class which dominated the Medieval period of Japan with its military prowess as well as with its significant contributions to the arts and culture of Japan.
The lesson is presented in a slideshow format with PowerPoint images that accompany each part of the lesson. There are three sets of PowerPoint images provided:
The Way of Tea, and
The lesson covers the origins of the samurai, their influence on feudal Japan and how their roles changed in the Edo period, how society in Medieval Japan was structured, samurai armor, the influence of Zen Buddhism on the samurai, bun and bu (the culture of arts and arms), the way of the warrior known as bushido, and their cultivation of the arts including ikebana, shodo, rock gardens, and haiku, with a special look at chado known as the way of tea.
There are two versions of a very easy art project that accompanies the samurai armor lesson. Here, students will make a replica menpo (half face mask) with an attached yodare-kako (throat guard):

Facial hair can even be glued on using scrunched strips of left over scraps of white copy paper. Mask can be glued onto a colored sheet of paper to display (optional).
2. For the EASY PREP VERSION, copy the printable provided onto colored card-stock. Students can color in the yodare-kake with colored pencils/crayons/markers, glue on pony beads representing riveted metal grommets and scrunched brown paper bag strips for facial hair, cut out, tape on some string, and either wear or display.
There is also a fun WRITING ACTIVITY that acts as a culmination of the entire lesson in which students must make a resume to get hired as a samurai. A printable template, instructions for activity, and a sample key are provided.

ABOUT MY COOL WORLD
We feel that we live in a time of unprecedented interconnectedness between people of widely different cultural backgrounds. Learning how to communicate across cultures by showing understanding and sensitivity to cultural differences is more important than ever. Our goal is to expose young children to the world to make lifelong differences in how they view others who may not necessarily look or sound like they do. Helping to increase tolerance and understanding is a passion of ours!
We have been teaching young kids in our local area about cultures around the world for several years, and we just love seeing the looks on their faces as they learn! Even young children are capable of learning so much! We started in our own school, but other schools have asked us to present our program in theirs as well. We have been doing this for the last few years.
Our approach is a bit different. We travel a lot, and we try to reflect many of our experiences in our lessons to make them as authentic as possible. Our lessons typically include a craft or an interactive activity that supports it. In this way, kids are having so much fun, they do not realize they are learning about things that are quite in depth!
Our flagship program has always presented an entire week with a focus on one country for schools, usually during the week after yearly testing. Our feedback has been really positive, so we are now just putting certain lessons on TPT. Be on the lookout for all of them in the near future! We have curricula on Japan, India, Italy, South Africa, and Mexico already completed.
As we are new to TPT, we would love to get feedback from you! Please email us. If you offer us feedback, maybe you would be interested in trying another lesson for free?!
Thank you so much!
TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS
"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country’s heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
