If your students have access to the internet and a computer or other electronic device, this 6-page PDF document makes an excellent substitute teacher plan for Chinese teachers! We so rarely have a Chinese-speaking substitute teacher. With this plan, the substitute teacher will only need to oversee students working independently.
The document walks students through how to use the online dictionary at https://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php and guides them in investigating some of its many useful features. Students will try out looking up words in four different ways: through typing its pinyin spelling (if they know the sound of the word), radical look-up, copy and paste, and handwriting input.
Along the way, students will learn about why recognizing radicals can be helpful, a few fun words that they look up, and a Tang dynasty poem: 春晓 by Meng Haoran.
Teachers may provide the document to students electronically or print copies to use as handouts.
