This super vocabulary list for the first week of school is borrowed and paraphrased from the International Baccalaureate program's IB Learner Profile. Set high expectations with these ten important learner qualities to which you can refer back and incorporate throughout the year. We want students to be inquirers, open-minded, and reflective. As teachers we seek to inspire our kids to be principled, risk-takers, knowledgeable, balanced, caring, communicators, and thinkers. I start the year with the basic PowerPoint while students use guided notes and draw pictures to help them understand the qualities. On subsequent days I use various other activities (also available as a free file) to set the state for rigorous learning throughout the year. Large renditions of the words are posted on my wall all year long, so we can use them to analyze characters and/or to monitor self-assessment and growth. Through the years I have seen great impact teaching these learner qualities to my middle school students, and they build on the typical citizenship education kids receive in elementary school. I call it "Wildcat learners are...†because wildcat is our school mascot. You can easily substitute "wildcat†with a word of your own choice.
