Learning Composition with Ollie Overture is a sequential method for learning composition and reinforcing skills and concepts learned in the beginning orchestra classroom. In my classroom an “overture” is our special name for bell work. These compositions are meant to be done in the first few minutes of class.
I have students complete them during the tuning process.
The composition assignments follow the sequence in which I teach
concepts in my beginning orchestra classroom, however, they can be used out of sequence if the teacher chooses.
This book contains 20 small, 4-measure compositions that introduce one new topic, concept, note, or rhythm while reinforcing skills and concepts previously learned. There are 6 “Big Compositions” which are large, 8-measure compositions that bring together all the concepts previously learned. The “Big Composition” assignments allow the student to be more creative in their composing while still following a set of guidelines.
Each composition assignment is accompanied by a rubric for the teacher to use to grade the assessment.
I hope this collection of composition “overtures” enable you and your students to explore the joys of music through composition.
