A Learning Goal and Scale (Marzano’s Model) for the classroom expectations, rules and procedures. This is a useful tool for students to reflect on and monitor their behavior in the classroom. We also use the Responsible Thinking Process school wide and this fits nicely together. It will fit well with your own classroom management techniques.
The behavior scale is also a great way to introduce learning goals and scales to the students before introducing academic goals and scales. I have introduced the scale by scoring characters in stories before asking the students to scale themselves.
The learning goal is written in kid friendly “I can” statements. The scale provides evidence of students understanding and performance related to the goal.
The “goal” is for students to achieve a level 3 on the scale, showing they have met the learning goal. The scales provide opportunities for students to extend their learning and go beyond with Level 4 activities.
