We love learning letters! It is so much fun to sing the alphabet and learn our letters in order, and we are enjoying a bunch of fun and exciting games that help us do just that!

At the same time, we are making sure to give extra attention to the super significant consonants that will pop up in so many CVC words!

No matter which particular phonics program your school has chosen to use, the mini-books in this "Learning Letters Series" allow you to mix-and-match letters based on your own students' needs, while very closely following the suggested sequence for initial consonant instruction found across most major phonics programs.

Each letter gets to be the star of its own booklet. These mini-books are full of familiar images that your students will recognize and be able to name. The structure is as follows:

Page introducing a new picture:
"R is for (ring picture)." students will say 'picture word' aloud each time!
"R (ring picture)"

Followed by a page that says:
"I said (ring picture)."
"I said R".

Your students can practice making the sound of each letter as they read and color these BW mini-books, and then work on differentiating the letters (R and G) from one another through a picture sort and color-by-letter activity.

You'll also notice the 4 Pre-Primer sight words featured on each page. This sight word- exposure gives students the opportunity to read the words in context and to gain familiarity with their meaning and spelling.

These mini-books (and their complimentary activities) teach letter-sound correspondence, and give students the opportunity to understand the letter-sound connection that they are making. Children are provided with the language "G is for (gum). I said (gum). I said G" that allows them to realize (and briefly explain aloud) the correspondence between the letter and the sound it makes. Being cognizant of this connection will provide a strong foundation to grow upon when your students are introduced to new letters and sounds, and soon, entire words!

Each book ends with a special dinosaur-themed reading certificate that your kiddos will love.

Suggestions for use

I suggest going through each 'mini-book' a couple of times with your students.
First, read it together as a class, and make a point of emphasizing the SOUND that each letter makes on every page Next, take advantage of the opportunity to teach sight words! Encourage students to color these words as they read the story, in the 'color code' of your choice. Finally, give each of your little readers the opportunity to read the 'mini-book' to you! They will be so excited to show off their newly developed reading skills, and will be thrilled to receive the well-deserved dinosaur certificate that comes with each booklet.

Follow-up this reading fun with the great activities provided for each letter!
