This learning log helps students reflect on their learning. It also helps me understand what I need to go back and revisit with the class or small groups.
How do I use them?
The learning log changed the course of my teaching all together. At the beginning of every-other week my kids grab one of these logs and put them in their math binders. As class comes to a close they take out their learning log and record their level of understanding for the day. The most important part are the lines to record exactly what is causing them trouble.
On Thursdays they take out their log and look over their learning for the week. They are then in charge of looking for the 1s or 2s on their map [things they need a little extra help with] and putting those lessons in the "let's revisit this box". They then leave these on their desks for about 3 minutes and continue their work while I walk around and take a look at their logs.
Suddenly - my kids are taking responsibility for their own learning, I have actual data to show their parents when considering extra help, and low&behold I have a way to make small groups at a glance for extra intervention on "differentiation day:"
