This is a science experiment that teaches the concept of osmosis. The wonderful part about this lab is that its simple and a great visual for the students. The problem question for the lab is "What solution will cause a gummy bear to swell the most?" Students test out saltwater, sugar water, and plain water. It is so great to see the students' expressions when they pull the gummy bear out of the water solution. It is not what they expected.
I like to teach this lab before teaching the concept of osmosis and then afterwards I discuss why the gummy bear in the water grew so much. However, this is great to do after you teach them the principle of osmosis as well.
