This product is intended to help teachers plan instruction through the use of the following resources:
Learning Style Inventory
Description: Students indicate the frequency with which 24 statements are true for them. Each frequency category is assigned a numerical value, and students simply add up the numbers to see which of the learning styles is theirs. Some will be obviously visual or kinesthetic, but most students will fall between two or more. For example, someone may be both tactile and auditory. Appeal to kinesthetic learners by posting the four classroom labels for visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic learning (included). Once all students are finished, have them go to the relevant corners that describe them. Students between two or three styles may place themselves accordingly. Have a few students share about their choices. Leave the signs up as a reminder that they must study the way they learn. Once they understand how they learn, the teacher can record the data on the Learning Style/Learning Approach Teacher Data Planner (included), plan lessons accordingly, and teach students how to study according to their styles.
Learning Approach Inventory
Description: Just like the learning style inventory, students indicate the frequency with which 24 statements are true for them. These questions relate to the ways in which students function best in the classroom. Students will discover if they approach learning from a practical perspective, a planned perspective, a social perspective, or an independent perspective.
Learning Style/Learning Approach Teacher Data Planner
Description: Once students have completed the Learning Style Inventory and the Learning Approach Inventory, the teacher can fill in this chart to use as a quick reference when planning instruction. Beside each student name, the teacher just checks off the style and approach of that child. For example, a teacher can skim the chart and group the visual learners together for a project, pair auditory learners during a reading exercise, or place social students together to cut down on across-the-room chatter.
Description: This two-page handout offers tips for applying students’ learning styles to their academic lives at school and at home.
