This learning target template provides a way to gain daily and weekly formative information from students and to train them to self assess their learning on a daily and weekly basis. Functioning as a weekly agenda, the template includes the Topic, Level (Depth of Knowledge), and Assessment means for the daily learning targets. For each target, there is a space for students to assess their learning on each day's targets. Finally, at the end of the week, students answer two reflection questions, one relating to their learning progress and the other relating to their mindset (positive/negative/fixed/growth) incorporating work we are doing with Dr. Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset research. This is a way to call attention to the importance of growth mindset in learning on a continual basis. Completing this formative and self assessment piece, students have provided me with more insight and information about their learning and the potential obstacles to their learning than any other means I have incorporated. I have even used this approach with community college students.
