In our kindergarten classes we teach children “The Pledge of Allegiance” at the beginning of the year. It is often the first time they have said the pledge. So, even though the vocabulary is sophisticated, we like to talk with children about the words and meanings of the pledge. This close reading lesson meets our needs to teach school routines at the beginning of the year, to begin teaching about the symbols of our country which is a social studies standard for our district, and to begin to discuss and learn new vocabulary in text.
This lesson includes teaching ideas and an 8 page printable booklet for children to complete. We usually work on them over a week in kindergarten.
