Theme is a difficult concept for students to understand... They seem to struggle with finding the BIG picture, or how the story relates to themselves and the real world. In addition, I have found that although students use words such as "responsibility", "teamwork", "honesty", etc... (all common book themes) when speaking, when it comes to explaining how these themes relate to stories... they are unable to do so correctly. As a result of facing these same difficulties in my own classroom, I created a few resources to help my students gain a better understanding of theme and some of the common themes used throughout literature.
In this resource you will find the following:
*A full page poster defining THEME as THE MEssage in a story that you can find and apply to your own life.
*12 half sheet posters with the name and description of a common theme found in literature. It also includes an adorable graphic to help students remember the meaning of each theme.
*12 full page writing activities to evaluate students understanding of each theme
*4 pages of book recommendations covering each of the themes included in this resource.

I hope you find this resource useful in your own classroom, and that it prepares your students for identifying themes in literature.
If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
