This resource is a low-prep PowerPoint lesson to help students with their summarizing and word analysis skills. There are slides for The Gradual Release Model that can either be displayed or used for teacher notes.
The lesson is broken into two parts and can be completed in one-two days depending on your class time frame. Approximate time needed for each slide is included in the Notes section.
Part One of the lesson is a paired activity that focuses on dividing the text into topic sections and summarizing the text.
Part Two of the lesson is a group activity that focuses on determining figurative and connotative word meanings and author’s word choice to analyze tone. Students complete large charts and the lesson ends with a Gallery Walk.
This lesson is part of a full set of plans to thoroughly analyze word choice, structure, central idea, tone, and more in "Learning to Read and Write."
