Leaving Tracks is a reading comprehension method that completely revolutionised the way I teach Reading in my classroom. It identifies ten comprehension areas and encourages students to note-take as they read whilst identifying the comprehension area associated. It allowed my students to tune in to every aspect of their comprehension capabilities on a daily basis with amazing results! Students are introduced to each track at the beginning of the year through explicit modelling and then apply the tracks to their own reading. In my Year Six classroom, I exposed my students to all ten tracks but you can pick and choose which you feel are relevant to your students. Students then had a 'Leaving Tracks Book' that they write notes in both in class and at home.
As with all good teaching, feedback is a necessity. These Leaving Tracks Exit Slips will not only allow you to assess your students according to the Leaving Tracks Criteria but also give them explicit and instantaneous feedback on the areas they need to improve.
