Leaving Tracks is a reading comprehension method that completely revolutionised the way I teach Reading in my classroom. It identifies ten comprehension areas and encourages students to note-take as they read whilst identifying the comprehension area associated. It is suitable for all readers and allows for differentiated learning as students use this tool with their own Just Right Book. It allowed my students to tune in to every aspect of their comprehension capabilities on a daily basis with amazing results! Students are introduced to each track at the beginning of the year through explicit modelling and then apply the tracks to their own reading. In my Year Six classroom, I exposed my students to all ten tracks but you can pick and choose which you feel are relevant to your students. Students then had a 'Leaving Tracks Book' that they write notes in both in class and at home.

This resource states each track as a Learning Intention which is useful to display. I use this when I model each track by pasting the learning intention at the top of my modelling book for that session.
