READY TO USE LESSON PLAN
This lesson challenges students to perform a close-reading of Pat Mora's poem "Legal Alien," and analyze how the author's use of conflict conveys the central ideas. I have found this lesson to be very effective, as I've used it many times in my 11th grade classroom, and that it is particularly engaging for students who are bilingual, as many of them articulate their text-to-self connections when we do this lesson.
The lesson, which can be used as is by teachers or modified to fit their purposes, consists of an Aim, Do Now, Preview of Pertinent Vocabulary, a Reading Period, a Work Period consisting of rigorous, higher-order, text-dependent questions, an Exit Question, and a Homework assignment-- all of which are aligned to the lesson's Aim.
* Note: If you like this lesson, I have posted a lesson for another poem that is thematically relevant: "El Olvido" by Judith Ortiz Cofer. You may want to choose to buy both if you want to create a unit on Latin American poetry.
