In this project, I have my students research some major drugs, their effects and properties, as well as their past and current legal standing (scheduling, etc). Based on their research, students then argue whether or not the current legal status of the drug should or should not change in the future. This project is presented in the format of a silent symposium, where students bring up their presentations on iPads. The iPads are then put on tables around the room and students move from iPad to iPad collecting information and asking the authors questions if they have any. At the end of the project we had a discussion about the legal standing of drugs and whether or not this is tied to their effects on people. This project was done in a neurobiology class during a unit that focused on the effects of drugs on the brain.
