This unit integrates common core reading, writing, speaking, and listening standards. The final product that students create in the unit is an original legend/myth story in the form of a reader’s theater script. Before completing the writing task, students will learn about characteristics of legends and myths. They will see several examples of legend and myth stories in published reader’s theater scripts. Students will practice reading out loud as they read the scripts. They will also fill out an organizer for each script they read which allows them to analyze the characteristics of the story. Finally, when it is time to organize ideas for the writing task, the writing organizer is similar to the one that they completed in the reading tasks. In the end, the writing will be presented to the class and critiqued as the class performs each others’ original scripts.
