Leif Ericson (also spelled Erikson or Ericsson) was the first European to set foot in America. Move over Columbus! He was a Viking explorer who lived around 1000 CE, and set up the Vinland colony, believed to be located in Newfoundland in Canada. In the United States, we commemorate the the valiant deeds of this brave adventurer on October 9, when we celebrate Leif Erikson Day!
