Have your fifth graders complete this project to work authentically with money, experience the reality of what it costs to produce a good and the income you make after covering those costs. Have them go even farther by representing that data graphically, and analyzing it to reflect their profits.
This lesson plan outlines how to set up and organize a sale that your fifth graders can orchestrate selling lemonade, keychains, and cookies (or change any of these to some other easily made good). They will experience the work that goes into producing a good, the challenges that come from trying to sell them, and the different successes that they may experience in the process. It also requires them to work closely with the data to analyze those successes or failures and understand why these visual representations are so important.
