This unit was created to put some fun into measuring length! In this unit, students will become carpenters and use tools to measure to the nearest inch and centimeter, half inch, and fourth of an inch.
Included you will find:
*pictures of examples
*measurement posters for reference
*practice cards measuring in inches and centimeters
*map scale measurement activity
*rotation activities for measuring with rulers and measuring when the ruler doesn't line up with 0!
*project: students will build a "customary" house and a "metric mutt" house using what they learn about inches and centimeters (the kids get really into this!)
-I made an easier version that only goes to half an inch for the project, the regular version goes to fourths for one measurement!
*folded organizer for exploring the metric and customary system of measurement (turns out looking like rulers on the outside)
I even got a class set of the kid's orange aprons from my local home improvement store for the kids to wear during the unit. We used them as our tool belts and kept our rulers and pencils in there. They were way into it and it was really fun and engaging!
I hope your class enjoys and learns from these activities as much as mine did!
