-5 Page Article about Leonardo Da Vinci with Graphic Organizers and Activities Embeded in the Text Following Each Paragraph
-Teaching Guide explaining Depth and Complexity Icons and Article Activities
-Differentiated, Common Core Aligned Assessment
The article focuses on keeping students actively engaged as they read since there is an activity for each paragraph that is based on the depth and complexity icons. After one paragraph, students will compare and contrast portraits from Da Vinci's time versus now (relate over time). After another paragraph, students will pick out interesting facets about Da Vinci's life (details). And after an additional paragraph students will use context clues to define apprentice and master artisan (language of the discipline). There are many more.
This nonfiction article includes strong main ideas in each paragraph in order to aid in finding main ideas and in order to be compatible with the Step Up to Writing program. It lends itself well to color coding each paragraph. I wrote it so students would be able to find a main idea/topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion sentence.
This is a fun and engaging way to get students involved with reading a nonfiction text while also focusing on historical content. My students enjoyed this unit and I hope yours will too!
