Product Description
Leonardo da Vinci......some consider him the greatest human mind and genius who ever lived, while others believe he was no more than a talented and prolific but ultimately failed inventor. And many children today only know him from his paintings of the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper. This article aims to increase student awareness and knowledge about this great dreamer and symbol of the Renaissance, who envisioned many of the modern marvels of technology such as airplanes and submarines.

This biographical reading and assessment activity on Leonardo was written for Grades 7-10. It can be completed independently or with guided teacher discussion and requires the application of close reading skills, which involve revisiting the text several times after a first reading to locate key facts, details, and concepts. This printable is also ideal to leave for a sub in any history or science class. It can also lead to extension activities such as individual student investigations of Leonardo’s many inventions or a debate on whether his life should be considered a success or a failure.

Students read an entertaining and informative 1600-word text on Leonardo da Vinci written at a 7th-9th grade reading level. The article traces his life story chronologically as well as provides a review of the many artistic, scientific, architectural, and philosophical plans/dreams of this magnificent Italian. (Please see the Preview).

After the reading are 31 text-dependent multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, or writing questions. The questions were written to align with Common Core Informational Standards RI.6.1, RI.6.3, RI.6.5, RI.7.4, and RI.7.8. Answers are provided for all questions.
