Have students pair-share to discuss all they know about leprechauns. After debrief, explain purpose of writing task: write a creative, descriptive story about either a leprechaun who builds a trap to protect his/her gold OR someone who builds a trap to steal the leprechaun's gold.
Display and discuss the provided rubric or any rubric of your choice before students begin working to ensure students are aware of the expectations for the writing task. Students then plan using their choice of organizer (list or comic style). Be sure students understand this is a STORY about a trap used, not just a list of steps.
Our students were studying magnets (grade 2) and simple machines (grade 3), so we required these were incorporated. Planning sheets are provided which allow more flexibility with materials.
