This unit plan is all about fluids. It includes 8 PowerPoints, guided notes for each PPT, and lab sheets for the following topics: Intro to fluids, States of Matter, Rate of Flow, Density, Mass vs. Volume and Weight, Buoyancy, Pressure, and Hydraulic vs. Pneumatic systems. This unit also includes a unit outline, as well as two assessments that could be used for review and grading.
This unit was created for French Immersion students taking Science. It took me approximately 1.5 - 2 months to complete with my classes.
Most of the items that I used for labs are easy to obtain and often reusable for other classes. A few things that I invested in were small scales to measure between 0-100 grams (about $10 on Amazon - only used for two labs, so optional), syringes/tubing for simulating hydraulics (fairly cheap at pet/farm stores), and small plastic graduated cylinders - which can be substituted for small cups that come with cough syrup. Other cheap items that I used for these labs included: used file folders, various shampoos or kitchen liquids, rulers, eggs, textbooks for weight, nuts and bolts, recycled plastic bottles and caps, food colouring, etc. Many of these items could be substituted for other objects.
The labs follow the typical Scientific Method of investigation. Students need to complete sections in their lab reports (handouts) that focus on planning and performing, data collection, and also analyzing and explaining their results.
