I created this synopsis powerpoint for a presentation for a nearby retirement home (did a teach/watch movie session). I took my many lessons, which I have created from the novel, and condensed them into this powerpoint. This is not a full discussion of everything that was going on in France but a discussion on some of the political, social, and economic conditions that lead up to the 1815 scene. There is a detailed discussion on the economy of France from 1780s to the time of Valjean's arrest for stealing loaf of bread. I discuss reason for price of wheat increasing, price ceiling, hyperinflation. I do not go in detail about the governments but do give a brief overview of the governments in place during this time (and a little about the kings that ruled during time period of movie). I have in the powerpoint spots where you discuss then watch part of the movie (1815 scene, stop then discuss before watching 1823 scene, stop and discuss stuff before watching last part 1832 scene). I have economic graphs that explain why things happen but if you do not feel comfortable with the graphs, you can just delete them. If you have any questions, let me know. This powerpoint does not go along with my big Les Miserables unit (there is another powerpoint for that one). This one is one you can use in case you needed something to help in your discussion of the movie/novel. I did include some stuff from the novel that feels in the gaps to the movie (such as how Father Madeline became rich). Any questions let me know.
