Have you ever felt like you would like to do debates with your class but weren't quite sure how to go about them?
This package has been designed to make debates as easy and scaffolded as possible. Everything has been broken down and organized so that students get the most out of this activity.
The package includes: visual organizers and explanations of how debates are supposed to look like, possible debate topics for grades 4,5,and 6. For grades 5 and 6, assuming that students can think more critically, I have linked the topics with Social Studies- which gives this project a cross-curricular dimension. Also, in this package, the structure of the debates is made explicit so that students know exactly what to expect. A set of debate rules/protocols are also included, and there is also a list of guiding questions to help students formulate their debate by better articulating their ideas and predicting their opponents' rebuttals. A bibliography sheet is included and is an organizer for students to use during the debates. Of course, to facilitate marking, a rubric has also been included.
I usually work on this in conjunction with my "Discours responsabilisé" package- just to teach them (the students) strategies on how to politely agree/disagree with one-another.
