Similar to my complex sounds activity, these cards were designed to help students practice their letter sounds and syllables. They can be cut, laminated and used in learning center activities but I prefer using them as a whole-group pocket chart game.
I start by placing the cards in a pocket chart. At the beginning of the year, I place the cards in order (ex: ba, be, bi, bo, bu, bé). As my munchkins get more fluent throughout the year, I add more cards and mix them up. I randomly choose 3-4 cards and hide a yellow heart behind them. Each student gets a turn to read a card. Once they’ve read, I ask them to come up to the pocket chart and check if there is a yellow heart hiding behind their card. If so, they are rewarded with a little treat such as a lollipop or a small eraser. This little incentive helps keep my students attentive, on-task and motivated. I hope you enjoy this activity as much as I do!
