“Choices” holds that all human beings have an essential, foundational need for love. In most cases, if not all cases, beneath behavioral, social, and emotional problems and issues, lies an unsatisfied love need. We all have a need to give and receive love. Lesson 1 defines love need and helps students identify their love need.
Our culture, as well as all human cultures, has a myriad of concepts, definitions, and application of the word love. Taking the general confusion we seem to have about it, “Choices” proposes a comprehensive definition of love. Simply stated, “Love is an attitude and action that affirms value.” “Choices” makes the basic assumption that all humans have essential, ultimate value. Regardless other the characteristics of the individual, nothing increases or decreases his or her value.
Lesson Objectives: The students will
1. State the “Choices” definition of love
2. Recognize the importance of love in human experience
3. Identify specific occasions when they showed love to someone
4. Identify specific occasions when someone showed love to them
5. Describe at least one way they can show love to another person
6. Describe at least one way they would like for someone to show them love
Assumptions and Concepts:
“Choices” assumes that all human beings have innate essential ultimate value:
1. Human value is innate: humans have value simply because they are human.
2. Human value is essential: human value depends on nothing else. Nothing can add to it; nothing can reduce it.
3. Human value is ultimate: human value equals the value of ultimate reality.
4. To live successfully and have meaningful and satisfying relationships, we must have a settled understanding, a guiding life principle that:
a. “I have ultimate worth and value.”
b. “You have ultimate worth and value.”
