In this religious education lesson students examine representations of heaven, hell, and angels and describe saints and cultural traditions surrounding death. Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and Dia de los Muertos are built into this lesson as cultural references. Students will look at these traditions in a whole new light.
This lesson could be easily adapted for older students by adjusting the vocabulary section.
Students draw a representation of heaven and hell and describe what they drew (a worksheet is provided). They go through vocabulary commonly associated with saints and angles. Students create a paperclip angel (directions and pictures are provided). A tested recipe for day of the dead bread is also included. The new prayer for this lesson is the Guardian Angel Prayer.
Lesson 3: Saints and Angels can stand alone by removing the "Pray for Us" component or can be combined with Lesson 1: Prayer and Lesson 2: Creation.
