When you want to kick off using reading journals/reading notebooks with your students, you'll need some buy in. Many students will wonder, "Why would I bother writing about my reading? Can't I just read and that's it?" This lesson addresses those questions, and allows them to see that it's not always just a SCHOOL thing, that people don't just write about their reading because their teacher said so.
The lesson involves student discussion and a small amount of writing. It is intended to be the first lesson before you teach other mini lessons on different ways one can use a notebook to write about their reading.
This is a detailed lesson plan plus an accompanying Smartboard file. I also suggest a simple anchor chart that can be hung in the room after the lesson.
