Lesson Progression

Suggestions about how you can use these resources to teach an engaging lesson on RI.5.2. This 3-page document explains how to use each resource.

Informational Passage #1

A nonfiction text about gymnastics star Gabby Douglas. This passage is about her childhood. The passage is 519 words and is written on a fifth-grade reading level.

Main Idea Activity

In this activity, students are given two main ideas from passage #1. They are asked to highlight details from the passage that support each main idea. Then they must write one of the sentences they highlighted and explain why that sentence supports the main idea.

Write a Summary

On this page, students must write a summary of passage #1. The question is worded in a way to help students understand what they must write about in order to write a complete summary of the passage.

Informational Passage #2

This passage is about Gabby's professional gymnastics career. It is 979 words long and is written on a fifth-grade level. This is provided as a fresh read for assessment or reteaching purposes.

Quiz Over Passage #2

Includes four multiple-choice questions and one short-answer question about passage #2. All questions correlate to RI.5.2. This will allow you to determine whether or not your students understand RI.5.2.
