This secondary lesson plan is designed for a 70-90 minute class period and intended for grades 9-12. Lesson plan includes Common Core ELA Standards for grades 9-12.

This inspirational writing lesson is ideal for the English Language Arts, Advisory, Life Skills, or Character Education setting. I created it when I was teaching The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens in an effort to reinforce to importance of kindness.

Students must have access to technology as the lesson includes an 11 minute Ted Talk on the power of kindness.

This is also a great addition to your emergency sub folder!

IN ADDITION TO A DETAILED DAILY LESSON PLAN, THIS BUNDLE INCLUDES:

* a paragraph rubric

* daily DOL (daily oral language exercise)

Content Objective (WHAT?)—based on standards/essential learnings:
students will analyze ideas & propel conversations to clarify, verify, or challenge
ideas (birdseed)
students will apply understanding of daily quote to own lives (birdseed journal
reflection)
Students will demonstrate command of conventions including correct use of
commas, periods, apostrophes, semicolons, and capitalization
Students will analyze and reflect on concepts addressed in text (video)
students will recognize the benefits of kindness relate subject with own experiences
Content Language Objective (HOW?)—involves 4 language domains: reading-writing-speaking-listening: (all 4 may not necessarily be addressed in one day)
Students will orally identify missing punctuation during DOL (reading, speaking &
listening)
students will contribute to whole group discussion during Birdseed (speaking and
listening)
students will reflect on birdseed and write reflection (writing)
Students will watch/listen to video on kindness (listening)
students will discuss/share personal connections to topic (speaking & listening)

students will write response to prompt on kindness (writing)
