PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This guidance lesson supports the Character Education and the Six Pillars of Citizenship for character Counts. It details the Standards and Benchmarks, and goes with the Smartboard or PowerPoint lesson also in my store which uses the book, Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed, with a link to a video. The book is a great book that is about "Ordinary Mary—an ordinary girl from an ordinary school, on her way to her ordinary house—who stumbles upon ordinary blueberries. When she decides to pick them for her neighbor, Mrs. Bishop, she starts a chain reaction that multiplies around the world. Mrs. Bishop makes blueberry muffins and gives them to her paperboy and four others—one of whom is Mr. Stevens, who then helps five different people with their luggage—one of whom is Maria, who then helps five people—including a man named Joseph who didn’t have enough money for his groceries—and so on, until the deed comes back to Mary.

It’s a feel-good story that inspires and celebrates a world full of ordinary deeds!" It works great with the character word, CARING.

This accompanying piece of the lesson includes a letter to send to parents (fully customizable for you and your school) with a coloring sheet on back. It also has the labels that go with the project of the Kindness Journal that the kids make to write about the caring acts / acts of kindness that they do in the subsequent week.

If you purchase the SMART BOARD flip char or PowerPoint presentation, it INCLUDES A LINK TO A VIDEO of the book as well as INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETE WITH PHOTOS OF A HANDS-ON PROJECT of making a Kindness Journal for the kids to track acts of kindness in real life. I am not sure where the idea for the journal came from, so I apologize for not giving credit for it.

I have used this lesson with grades K through 5, and it is wonderful. I especially like using it around the holidays or around Valentine's Day, but it will work throughout the year.

This should only be used as your classroom resource for teaching this lesson. It should not be published. Copyright- Counselor Bev
