Instead of teaching geographical physical and water features the old way, this lesson asks students to develop their own definition of common physical and water features based on an illustration, apply the new word immediately by finding an example in an atlas or on a map (atlas or map not included), and then practice finding lat and long by writing down the lat and long of the example that they find.
You won't believe the great definitions they come up with, the cool examples that they find, and how this exercise locks in lat and long skills and intuition for the long haul.
This product includes:
- Teacher instructions and lesson plan.
- PDF Slides of 26 common physical and water features; the slides use original Helms Bilingual Education illustrations and feature the illustration and vocabulary word in Spanish.
- Student organizer where students can write down the word, their definition, their example, and the lat / long of their example. Organizer has a place for students to write down the page number for their interactive student notebook or binder.
One of the best things about this lesson plan is that it usually doesn't matter if a group finishes faster than other groups. It's fun to see how they keep looking for more examples and get absorbed in the atlases as they wait for other groups to finish. A great example of students' teaching themselves geography!
P.S. The slides make a great word wall! After you do this lesson plan print them out and put them on your bulletin board to serve as a vocabulary reference sheet for your students!
