When teaching theme, it is important to use a lot of connections in a way that students will understand. In this PowerPoint, theme is broken down clearly for them with a variety of examples. I love to use Pixar Shorts to have students analyze it for possible themes, which is included in this product. I also include a story that is realistic for students and ask them to identify theme once again, teaching them that not all themes are positive and about "happy endings if you just believe." Lastly, I include an activity using 5 different urban legends for 5 groups in your class. In this assignment, students are given incomplete urban legends with a random genre that they must alter and finish the urban legend to fit. More importantly, they must also make sure that a clear theme is carried out in their story. Once students have come up with their new story and theme, they must present it in front of the class as a skit and the class must guess their theme (or one close to it). If the class guesses their theme correctly, I always gave a few extra bonus points on their presentation!
