Product Description
This lesson is focused on an excerpt from "America Is in the Heart" by Carlos Bulosan, which covers parts of Chapters 13 and 14. The excerpt can be found in the Norton Anthology of American Literature. The lesson is on the terrible working and living conditions facing Filipinos (and just working people generally) in America in the first few decades of the twentieth century, and on the xenophobia and racism that foreigners faced. This connects well to other works of literature about (and by) first-generation immigrants to America, such as Anzia Yezierska and Mary Antin, as well as to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, in terms of the hardships that working-class people faced during The Great Depression.
