Who doesn't love an assignment that involves gummy bears?!
This 4-day project is meant to be done individually for the first two days and then collaboratively for the last two days. Students will address and practice the following Common Core State Standard:
Draw a picture graph and bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
I had groups of 4 working together on this project and it went very smoothly. The lessons were roughly 45 minutes long with a 5 to 10-minute mini lesson that included modeling and think-aloud of each day’s objective (i.e. Day 1 is to sort and record on a tally chart. I explicitly talked about what “tally marks” are, sorted the gummy bears, and modeled how to complete a tally chart based on my own bag of gummy bears. I did a think aloud as I completed the chart.) Of course, you can design your own lessons to accompany these worksheets!
