Rekenreks are nothing more than arithmetic racks that were designed by a Dutch mathematician. The rekenrek is a great visual model for developing number sense of 5, 10, and 20 (if using the double racks). They also support the strategy approach to learning.
This packet contains:
* Over 50 flashcards that can be used for subitizing practice, to flash and have students build, in stations, etc… The first set is working within 10, the second set within 20, the third and forth sets are combination cards that have a shifting equal sign and work on addition to 10 and 20
* Two game boards- Cover 10 and Cover 20
* Blank rekenreks to use in whole or small group. Students can use markers or real beads
*Rekenrek booklet to practice number writing and drawing
I also like to use the flashcards and combination cards to promote Number Talks in the lower elementary classroom

K. OA. 2 – Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, eg., by using objects or drawings
K.OA.3 – Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way. eg., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by drawing or equation.
K. OA. 4 – For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, eg., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
K. OA. 5 – Fluently add and subtract within 5.
1.OA.6 – Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
