This is an activity that allows students to go shopping in the comfort of your very own classroom!
I collected lots of food boxes, drink containers, etc... and printed off blank price tags. I labeled each item with a price and allowed my students to buy 3 items. They had to then calculate the subtotal. Afterwards, the paper directs them to calculate a discount along with tax to find out how much they will be spending. After my students calculated everything, I had them "check out" with me. I had a calculator that would print out a receipt and I stapled it to their paper.
This is a GREAT assignment to allow students to make a connection between mark up and mark down to real-world shopping!
