This was developed in order to teach Opinion (or Persuasive) writing. The conventions skill focus is on using adjectives and adverbs. It also includes practice with capitalizing titles.
The unit includes:
-Skill worksheets: Sorting Adjectives and Adverbs, Filling in the blanks with Adjectives and Adverbs, Sentence Editing with Titles
-Anchor charts for notebooks: 1 for Adjectives and 1 for Adverbs
-The OREO graphic organizer for Opinion Writing (many options for 1-3 reasons and examples)
-Publishing paper (many options, including for large and medium handwriting)
-Options for student teacher feedback: Pretend Movie Tickets to use for peer feedback and two rubrics appropriate for 1st and 2nd grades.
When I used this unit with my class, we focused on organizing great movie reviews with the OREO organizer previously taught. Our new skills were to use strong adjectives and adverbs and give great examples. At the end of the week, students shared their reviews, used their feedback movie tickets to award their peers for good work, and enjoyed eating popcorn and watching the "Let's Go To the Movies" scene from Annie!
