In this smart board lesson students are introduced to the different ways to spell the long a sound. The lesson begins with the long a sound spelled a_e. In this portion of the lesson students are given short vowel words and will add an "e" to the end of the word to create a word with a long vowel sound. The other spellings of the long "a" sound that are covered are "ai", "ay", and "eigh". When each spelling pattern is covered students will drag letters to make words. When students are dragging letters to make the words on the smart board, students at their desks could participate by writing the words on dry erase boards if available. In this lesson there are links to videos about the short "a" sound and "magical e" rule. There are also links to activities on the internet. At the end of the lesson there is a sheet included that can be printed for student use. On this sheet students will go on a scavenger hunt through books to look for words that have the long "a" spelling patterns that were covered in the lesson.
